Melbourne Victory 0 Liverpool 2: Suarez returns as Liverpool triumph in front of 95,000 fans at the MCG

The clock on the giant scoreboard showed 9.37pm, when a cheer erupted around the MCG and man wearing a Red shirt shuffled towards the touchline, whistling as he went.
After shaking hands with three of his team-mates and rubbing another one on the head, Luis Suarez walked onto the pitch and was able, for the first time since April 21, to take part in an official game of football for Liverpool.
By the time it had turned 9.59pm, Suarez had done what he is best at, creating the final goal of the night with a sharp turn and a prodded cross.

That Liverpool beat Melbourne Victory 2-0, thanks to a goals strike from Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas, became a subsidiary matter once Brendan Rodgers decided the moment was right to reintroduce Suarez. The question now is for how much longer he will be able to do that.
Wanted by Arsenal, who have angered Liverpool with a bid of £40million and £1 for Suarez, and watched by Real Madrid, the future of the man dubbed El Pistolero is a huge issue and how it pans out will have a massive bearing on his current club’s future.
Love him or loathe him – the 95,446 in the MCG were in the first camp – he is a gifted footballer, one who will not be easily replaced. The battle to gain fitness is going smoothly for Liverpool in the southern hemisphere but it is the fight to keep Suarez at Anfield that must be won.
The scrutiny may have been on the dugout in the moment before kick-off but, once the game started, the eye kept being drawn to the man wearing a distinctive pair of white boots who, moved powerfully and gracefully around midfield.

Rodgers has described the decision to extend Gerrard’s contract by a further two years  as one of the most significant pieces of business Liverpool will do this summer and it is not hard to see why the Irishman is so enthusiastic about him.
Though the venue, for its history and iconic standing, would be as good as anything Gerrard has played in, the game was little more than an exhibition; a workout designed to improve the fitness of Rodgers’ squad.
Gerrard, however, prepares for every game, no matter what the occasion, exactly the same: he sleeps when he is told, eats the right food and leaves nothing to chance. It is why he is sparkled so often over the last 15 years.
With a massive crowd of 96,000 packed inside the MCG, they had arrived hoping for one outcome and they got it in the 31st minute when Gerrard – to his great delight – opened the scoring with an impressively created goal.

When Jordan Henderson collected the ball, he rolled it towards Gerrard but the captain darted over it and allowed it to run to Joe Allen. The Wales international moved forward and spotted Gerrard bursting into the area; once he got the pass right, the outcome was never in doubt.
Having spoken in Jakarta about the need to regain confidence after being operated on two months ago, the delight on Gerrard’s face after he had rifled his shot past Melbourne keeper Nathan Coe was natural. It is a smile that should be produced many more times over the next 12 months.
His was the first meaningful shot at goal  but Melbourne, who had eight players missing due to international commitments with Australia, rarely threatened. Bar a shot in the 20th minute from boyhood Liverpool fan Andrew Nabbout, Brad Jones had little to deal with.

Liverpool looked the most likely to fashion a breakthrough and Raheem Sterling – with a deft lob –Allen, Henderson and Jordon Ibe all chanced their arm. Gerrard, too, had another shot that was beaten away. They were always in control.
A similar pattern ensued after the break. Liverpool bossed possession, Melbourne tried valiantly to keep pace and almost squeaked a goal of their own when Jones appeared to misjudge a shot from Conor Payne, who six months ago was playing for third tier state side Malvern.
Melbourne had a couple of other half opportunities  but so did Liverpool, with Fabio Borini (twice), Iago Aspas and Daniel Agger going close as the contest petered out to its conclusion.
It seemed deep in injury time that the scoring was done but, typically, Suarez had the final say. Given the way this summer has panned out, it couldn’t have been any other way.
